Some Interesting Study Results

The following four studies, done by two universities, a radio station, and a municipal advisory board, reveal some informative information about security cameras:

  • KTVB7: This TV station interviewed 86 inmates serving time for burglary at the Oregon Department of Corrections. The inmates said that security cameras were definitely a deterrent, especially if a security alarm went off.
  • Municipal Technical Advisory Service: An advisory service reviewed multiple academic studies and found that yes, CCTV cameras are effective in deterring crime.
  • UNC Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology: In a survey of 422 burglars across North Carolina, Ohio, and Kentucky, the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology found that the number one deterrent (at 64%)  was a police presence nearby. The second and third best deterrents were the existence of an alarm (53%) and outdoor cameras (50%). The least effective deterrents were security signs (25%) and Neighborhood Watch signs (13%).
  • Rutgers University: The School of Criminal Justice did a study in Newark, New Jersey. They found that, “Neighborhoods in which burglar alarms were densely installed have fewer incidents of residential burglaries than the neighborhoods with fewer burglar alarms.”
